Last year North Carolinians sent over 60,000 emails to legislators opposing the Home Tax. This effort stopped a statewide 1% land transfer tax. At the same time, 78% of voters surveyed said they oppose new taxes on homes.
Unfortunately, that did not stop some lawmakers from passing the budget, and allowing local politicians to put a Home Tax on the ballot.
But just as they did during the legislative session, voters at the local level soundly rejected the idea of a new Home Tax.
On November 6, 2007, 79% of North Carolina voters in 16 counties across all sections of our state said “NO” to the Home Tax. And on May 6, 2008, again, voters in four counties said "NO".
It’s simple: voters know that taxing the equity in their homes is a bad idea because it hurts young couples, working families and our senior citizens. It’s a tax on the equity in your home, on your hard work and your success.
